This type of spring, unlike the purely gas-filled, locking springs, in which the gas characteristics induce spring locking, fills the whole working range of piston with oil, allowing rigid locking and installation in any direction.

What is a locking gas spring?
Gastac has three types of Locking Gas Springs.
They are flexible locking gas spring, rigid in extension locking gas spring, and rigid in compression locking gas spring. All types of Adjustable Locking Gas Struts incorporate a mechanism enabling the user to “lock” the rod at any point in its travel through a plunger that protrudes from the rod. When this plunger is depressed the rod is free to operate as normal. When the plunger is released, which may be at any point in the stroke, the rod is locked in that position.
Gastac offers three types of locking gas springs, with the following characteristics when locked:
Flexible the rod may slightly spring under heavy compression or tension loading. These locking gas springs must be used in a rod-down orientation unless an “oil chamber” system is fitted.
Rigid in extension locking gas spring, no spring when rod is being pulled, slight spring when rod being pushed. These locking gas springs can be used in any orientation.
Rigid in compression slight spring when rod being pulled, no spring when rod is being pushed. These locking gas springs must be used in a rod-down orientation unless an “oil chamber” system is fitted.
